This video series will focus on analyzing chess positions, and generating candidate move orders from the position without moving the pieces or using computer analysis. The goal is to improve the ability to generate lines and variations mentally during a game, and to try to come up with a move that either maintains equality on the board, or paves the way for a slight positional edge.
I recommend pausing the video at the appropriate time and generating your own candidate moves. If this is something new you are working on improving, it's recommended that you write down your lines and over time you will be able to do this all in your head during a match.
I like c4 because it gains space on the queenside and locks black’s doubled pawns. The problem of Ne4 is after c5 the knight has to move leaving the c pawn undefended.
Bishop isnt trapped by computer move.
If black tries to trap with b6, c5 solves
I like Rook to D4, black moves his bishop, then pawn to C3 or c4
The computer recommended c4. Here’s a possible scenario.
1. c4 Rd8 2. Bxa7 b6 3.Rxd8+ Bxd8 4.Nd4 Bg6 5.Nxc6 Bg5 6.b4 Kd7 7.b5 Be4 8.Rd1+ Kc8 9.c5 Kb7 10.Rd7 Bxc6 11.bxc6+ Kxa7 12.Rxc7+ Ka6 13.Rxf7 Rc8 14.c7 bxc5 15.f4 Bh4 16. Rxg7 Kb6 17.g3
and, as a follow up thought…No way can I compete with the likes of Gary or Judith. I’m guessing they are the stars, I am the worm beneath the ground.
I appreciate you bringing these to us worms, JRobic. Help us from crawling out onto the asphalt in the rain just to find the Sun come out and broil us crispy at the hands of a shar player.
Before …./B-f5? Black has a strange gig going on. The B at h4 is way off mark and needs to return to e7, with an eye on
…./P-b6, ….c5, which appears to cramp W’s N and B. I would try to trade Rs, poking my K Qside, opening up the pawns to attack the W Kside. Of course, if I understand this correctly, you favor the Ruy Lopez, and here I am trying to find a better line for B.
Hmmmm. What, then? Pushing wood at dawn after ten paces?
thanks for the great videos. ive learned alot.
given enough time Rybka 3 finds the correct move: Rybka 3.0 mp 32-bit 3800 x2

Knd4 is what jumps out first, but it seems like it limits the black bishop a lot… and Be4 helps black more… does anyone see why not Rd2? protect and start the buildup… leaves the black bishop more options including xa7
Thanks B1zmuth!
i Like your english
you can also implement other computer engines into your graphical interface besides the built in crafty. So you can also use Rybka instead of crafty. (Rybka is considered the strongest computer chess engine, if I’m not wrong)
love your videos jrobi xD
lol your intro rocked
With the computer move, when black tries to trap white’s bishop with b6, couldn’t you advance your c pawn? That way, if b6Xc5, the bishop can recapture it and then it’s free, or if he tries to continue trapping with Ra8, then c5xb6, protecting the bishop.
Love your videos jrobi. Just a few notes:
1) At 4:58, I think Nf3 is not best. After black’s bishop retreats, your knight isn’t doing much except defending the e-pawn and blocking a possible f-pawn move (which would get your pawn majority moving.)
2)I think the position at 6:00 favors black. White’s bishop is blocked by a central pawn, making it a bad bishop. (It should have more than just a defensive role). Meanwhile, black will eventually post his bishop on the excellent g7 square.
Hey jrobi, nice video. It’s cool to see how other people go about thinking of moves. Do you ever go back to your first video and then to your most recent? It’s pretty impressive.
I use a few. If you don’t have one yet the graphical interface for the FICS server has one built in (crafty) and I have a vid on how to get that up and running.
what computer engine do you use. I am really curious
WHAT COMPUTER ENGINE DO YOU USE?
what computer engine do you use?
It is indeed very intersting. Thanks for the vid, good win here for Polgar.
He let go of the piece, and picked it up again – same rule is broken. As to why she decided not to – I have no idea. Quite possibly her overall experience in competitive chess at the time played a role, not to mention the possibility of getting into a verbal sparring match with a chess icon. Judit would not have been aware of the existence of the video during the heat of the moment, so it would be her word versus Kasparov’s. Very interesting story.
With respect the story is incorrect. You cannot move your piece back and move a different piece, no arbiter would allow that. Kasparov moved the same piece to a different square. The controvosy was as to whether Kasparov originally let go of the piece. After checking the video, Kasparovs hand quit the piece for 100th of a second. Polgar looked at the arbiter but did not protest, so the move was accepted.
Can you Please make a video on promotion
Can you please make a video on candinate moves four please
Yes it was fairly straight forward since it was a forcing move that black had made attacking the pawn, but you are totally correct – just considering the obvious is not the best thing – it’s good to look at all the options. Who knows what tactical opportunities might be found. Thanks for checking out the vid!
