I would have thought they would have said “the pawns can be any mothafucka he wanna be except king” haha… always choosing a queen can somtimes be the wrong move.
see how he looks at wallace when he says they get out early, and then bodie says unless they some smart *** pawns. Well this is what happens in the series isnt it. Clever stuff.
Well, this is a terrible and confusing explanation of chess. Can you imagine if all game’s instructions came in metaphor?
I love The Wire, but this scene was trying too hard to be profound. It is just a little too convenient that when D’Angelo is describing how the queen moves, Wallace chimes in about how that reminds him of Stringer. Would have been a much much better scene if they had been more subtle.
Now that’s a funny comment.

This scene is when I knew that The Wire was not going to be like any other show out there. Absolutely amazing. And so sad to watch knowing that none of them make it through the series.
Fucking amazing scene. All bow down to the greatness that was The Wire.

Everyone on The Wire was a pawn… with no chance of an 8th rank promotion.
Selling dope and wholesale murder is one thing, but playing checkers on a chess set deeply offended D’Angelo’s sense of propriety.

Possibly the best scene in the greatest show in TV history. We ALL need to avoid being a pawn.

I love this scene because it teaches you how to play while relating to the drug game at the same time. “The King stay the King” But if you look at the big picture throughout all 5 seasons it comes out like this.
The King = The Greek (The Drug supplier’s Supplier aka has the best coke)
Queens = Prop Joe, Stringer, Marlo, etc
Pawns = Bodie, Poot, Chris, Cheese, etc
R.I.P 2 everybody in this scene.The game chess can be translated into many aspects of life such as buisness and the drug game.
he didn’t explain that pawns can move two squares on their first move… he also didn’t explain how knights and bishops move… or did he later?
nah, he was smart but not the smartest. If he was the smartest he would have stayed out of the pen. I liked D, he was smart enough for the game but not hard enough, whereas Bodie weren’t that smart but he was hard so he lasted longer than D’angelo & wallace.
the wire is the best show, how come to they didn’t get emmys? greys anatomy focus on orgys more than they focus on saving lives. white folks didn’t want embrace urban culture like the wire but they nonimate show that benifits their lifestyle
